Heavy Snowfall and Road Closures: Impact of Extreme Weather Conditions
Climate change is a reality, and recent heavy cloudbursts and torrential rains have once again highlighted the significant changes in our climate. While plain areas are experiencing extreme heat, upper regions are witnessing heavy snowfall, creating a challenging and alarming situation.
Heavy Snowfall & Preventives
Numerous videos shared on social media show Babusar Top covered in heavy snow, with roads becoming treacherous and vehicles facing reduced traction. The snowfall is accompanied by an intense blizzard, resulting in compromised visibility. Travelers have been forced to stop by the roadside due to extremely hazardous driving conditions, and those en route to Babusar Pass have been halted before reaching their destination.
The local authorities have taken preventive measures and enforced road closures, prohibiting any form of business. However, there is no official information yet on when the Babusar Pass will reopen as the snowfall continues, and it may take several hours to clear the roads.
Night Travel Restrictions
The district administration has recently imposed a ban on night travel between Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan via the Mansehra-Naran-Jalkhad Road. According to Mansehra Deputy Commissioner Bilal Shahid Rao, the ban will be in effect from 6 pm in the evening until morning, aiming to ensure the safety of passengers and excursionists during the thunderstorm season.
Deputy Commissioner Rao further mentioned that the decision was made in collaboration with the Chilas administration. A formal directive has been issued to address this matter, and police personnel have been deployed at Babusar Top to enforce compliance and assist vehicles in adhering to the travel restrictions.
