Recycled Plastic Road in Karachi
In Karachi, a collaboration between DMC South, Shell Pakistan, and startup BRR Enterprise has resulted in the development of a road constructed using recycled plastic. The primary objective of this project is to address the issue of plastic waste and promote eco-friendly practices within the city.
The road, situated near Shell House in Karachi, was built utilizing a dry process method that recycled more than 2.5 tonnes of discarded Shell lubricant bottles. By incorporating these plastic bottles into the asphalt road, Shell Pakistan aims to reduce plastic waste and contribute to the establishment of sustainable infrastructure.
Plastic waste poses a significant environmental concern as it takes a considerable amount of time to decompose and can have detrimental effects. Plastic bags, for instance, can take up to 500 years to break down, while plastic bottles can persist for around 300 years. By utilizing discarded plastic bottles in road construction, Shell Pakistan takes a step forward in addressing this environmental challenge.
Roads infused with plastic offer various advantages compared to conventional roads, including enhanced flexibility, durability, and a lifespan nearly three times longer. Additionally, using plastic in road construction helps reduce costs as plastic materials are easily accessible and cost-effective when compared to traditional construction materials. This innovative approach not only contributes to sustainable infrastructure but also addresses the social issue of plastic waste.
"The potential to diminish plastic waste and provide an environmentally friendly option for future infrastructure projects in Pakistan is significant." -
